Jesus’ Sabbath did not end with teaching and driving out a demon at Capernaum’s synagogue. He went to the home of Simon, one of Jesus’ disciples, to have a bite to eat, I assume, not much different from those who attend a congregation (church) to this day.
When Jesus arrived at Simon’s house, they asked him to help Simon’s mother-in-law, for she was suffering from a high fever. A high fever for the elderly in those days was a serious condition. Jesus must have been tired, but he did not refuse them. Luke records that Jesus “rebuked the fever”, a curious phrase to use, as if the fever was induced by an external living being, like a demon. However, I am not sure, although one commentary I have provides an explanation.
Jesus was busy with ministry work all day. The next two verses tell of people bringing people to be healed, and demons came out of many others. The work of the Lord is a lifelong endeavour. We do not retire from it, but we do tire of it. Get rest when possible and follow Jesus’ example and meet with God in the solitude of daybreak. BDBD, meditation, and prayer before the day’s mission begins.
