Paul repeats what he stated in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 (which precedes the chapter concerning marriage): we are the temple of God (16b). The point he makes is the same: “let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” The subject is the same: who to bond with. Marriage and sex are important to God. Purity is important.
The temple purification procedures were rigorous, containing many steps and procedures. Every corner and cranny was to be purified. Similarly, every aspect of our body and spirit is to be pure. The reason is that God is in his believers. We are the temple.
Modern people who claim to know Christ are fixated on sex and sexual orientation, more than purity and devotion to Christ. Genesis 2:24 is clear: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” Any union outside of this is impure. Clean up, and God will be your Father. Then, preach Christ, not sex and sexual orientation.
