Paul compares charitable giving to a farmer sowing seeds. He borrowed and expounded upon Jesus’ “Parable of the Sower”. (Matthew 13:1-23; Mark 14:1-14; Luke 8:1-15) In that parable, a farmer scattered seed on four different types of soil. Only one produced a crop. The point of the parable is to be the good soil that produces a crop.
Paul expounded on being the good soil that produced a hundredfold crop and included the concept behind the “Parable of Ten Minas” (Luke 19:11-27). The point of that parable was to make a great profit from what the Lord God has given.
“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously”. (6; Proverbs 11:18, 22:9) Through God’s abounding grace, God can enable each Christian to abound in generous deeds. The pockets of frequent hands that give to the needy do not wear out.
