Mary’s decision was based on her position. Mary decided that she was the Lord’s servant. A servant believes the master’s word and, according to his word, does the master’s will. A servant is ready to go. A servant doesn’t have to understand everything, they just have to do.
This is Mary’s statement of faith. Without understanding God’s mission, it is hard to accomplish by man’s standards, but not by God’s. By faith, we can overcome obstacles. Accepting God’s will and emptying oneself are often the same and coincide. Obeying is not easy, and for a person of God, it is an unavoidable pain. But it leads to righteousness and blessing. Mary was prepared for whatever would happen because of this decision, for she trusted God. A rebellious person would not accept because they don’t trust God.
We cannot and should not use this to put absolute trust in a man or woman who calls themselves a servant of God. A long time ago I was in a group who had some leaders who wanted absolute trust and obedience because they called themselves “servants of God”. This verse does not promote such demands. Mary trusted God, not the angel.
