Timothy was a preacher and a teacher. He learned from Paul’s practical and theoretical teaching. Timothy was assigned to be the head preacher at Ephesus. Timothy had become afraid and ashamed of not only his mentor, Paul who was in prison but also his teaching (15).
Two men, Hymenaeus and Philetus were using Bible words and phrases in their teaching that the resurrection had already taken place (17, 14) They were propitiating that people who had died had risen from the dead; whether this was reincarnation as someone else or as themselves somewhere else on earth is not important.
Paul called it godless chatter to be avoided (16). Timothy was to present himself to God as one approved. He was to handle the word of God correctly.
Whenever I listen to a message, read something, or listen to someone on the radio or TV I pay attention to what they teach. Many false and deceiving information is taught these days. Without knowing the Word of God well and being inspired by the Holy Spirit I could easily be led to improper conclusions.
However, even though I may come to wrong conclusions I am comforted to know that the Lord knows me and I am his (19). I am to turn away from wickedness and its teaching.
